This is a family run and owned business first established in February 1986. Together with Roberts Tyres, a sister company on the same site, it nowadays specialises in the Sales and Service of pre-owned Mercedes Benz vehicles as well as repairs, M.O.T.s, servicing, tyres, batteries, and exhausts for most makes.
After working in the garage industry for their previous employer for a combined 35 years, father and son Keven and Mark Roberts, supported by Keven's wife (Mark's Mum) Barbara, purchased a very interesting site centrally located in the picturesque Lincolnshire market town of Sleaford.
Their partnership formed, the three family members opened their doors on their first trading day as Tyre Distributors known as Roberts Tyres. This being the specific area of the garage industry that they had extensive knowledge of.
From the first morning of opening on Feb 1st 1986 the partnership was to be happy, enjoyable and prosperous, as father and son worked side by side to establish a business that has grown and evolved somewhat in size since those early days but has never lost sight of its traditions, beliefs and goals. Barbara carried the burden of financially supporting the family, including their daughter Lynne, in the early days in her role as a Deputy Headmistress at one of the nearby schools.
After a wonderful 18 months of trading, the ever-adventurous father and son couldn't help but notice the amount of mechanical work that they were unable to retain as they had no mechanical facilities, little knowledge of their own and no Mechanical Technicians. After refurbishing a redundant building at the rear of the tyre workshop of approximately 1200 sq ft, Sleaford MOT & Service Centre was born. As they say, the rest is history.
From the initial day of opening with one mechanic carrying out M.O.T.s, servicing and repairs, they prospered and expanded, purchasing the adjacent yard and buildings enabling them to employ further mechanics, a full time valet, full time secretarial staff, workshop/service manager & venture into what has become a very well respected Quality Used Car Sales Centre specialising in the sales and servicing of Mercedes Benz vehicles.
From the initial purchase of one used Mercedes Benz, a white 2.0i 190E, things haven't remained still for too long. Over the years the levels, value, range and variety of stock has increased. During this time the original thought process has remained. "Quality not Quantity" was the message then and still is now. They don't wish to sell large quantities of cars, just good quality cars that they are pleased to have their name on.
Nowadays Stewart, a long time & trusted employee who has been with the business since 1988, runs all departments of Sleaford MOT & Service Centre from meeting & greeting customers, booking in of vehicles for Service and M.O.T., looking after the three Mechanical Technicians, sourcing used vehicles to customer requirements, Vehicle Sales etc, with Keven and Mark being on-site virtually all of the time.
Mark's time is spent running Roberts Tyres who have four full time tyre fitters and two on-site service vehicles for Agricultural/Haulage/Building Site work, whilst Keven does everything else. Taxing vehicles, number plate transfers, collection of vehicles purchased for sale, all behind the scenes work, generally running around after Mark and Stewart, and liasing with the two company secretaries. Having retired from teaching Barbara is always busy with Charity work for various organisations, walking, small tasks for the business and enjoying whatever time is then left of her retirement!
Providing prompt, courteous, polite friendly, personal attention with repeat customers and the business's informal approach, it’s not difficult to see how they remain so busy. The site they operate from is far from huge, but frequently the vehicles on site, be it for sale, service, repair, waiting for tyres, batteries, exhausts or enquires, add up to over 50 - making it rather cosy! The atmosphere that can be found here is tremendous and to be able to sit and watch the workforce in motion with the rapport between staff and customers, every visit is a pleasure.
